'Alarming' - does WSL have a homegrown problem?

The Women's Super League is seeing growing numbers of clubs field starting line-ups with few or no English or British players, with London City Lionesses and Tottenham both fielding largely non-British XIs in the season's opening matches. This reflects the league's increased global appeal and spending power, drawing top talent from Germany, Sweden, Japan, Australia and elsewhere, including Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas joining London City. Birmingham City manager Amy Merricks acknowledges this growth benefits the league but warns it is blocking pathways for young homegrown players, a shift from a decade ago when Manchester City won the WSL title with an all-British line-up.
