Analysing Premier League teams via xG data

Using expected goals (xG) data to look beyond the early Premier League table, Arsenal have been the best-performing team overall by xG difference despite their heavy defeat at Brighton, closely followed by Manchester City, with unbeaten Brentford also rating well. Manchester United's underwhelming league position masks a stronger underlying performance, with only three teams outperforming them on xG difference, while Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth also look better than their table position suggests. Aston Villa, Crystal Palace and Newcastle rate as the least impressive by this measure, and promoted sides Hull and Ipswich have made solid underlying starts, while Brighton have the best attacking numbers so far.
