Debate over allowing alcohol at football stadiums

PM Andy Burnham, an Everton fan, has restated his belief that the 1985 law banning fans from drinking alcohol within sight of the pitch is outdated and discriminatory, though no formal policy change is planned and MPs previously rejected a related consultation amendment. The ban covers English and Welsh clubs from the Premier League down, while National League North and South clubs and below are exempt; Scotland's stricter 1981 law is being eased via pilot schemes allowing alcohol in monitored stadium areas, now extended to national team friendlies against Switzerland and Slovenia. The Women's Super League has also scrapped its equivalent restriction after two successful trial seasons.
