Debbie Beard and Amanda Thorpe lost their husbands - this is their story

Debbie Beard and Amanda Thorpe, whose husbands Matt Beard and Graham Thorpe both took their own lives, met for the first time at an event launched by the Prince of Wales and the Royal Foundation. The gathering promoted a new nationwide toolkit called On Your Side, aimed at embedding suicide prevention into sport's culture. Amanda has said she believes Graham would still be alive with more support from the ECB after he lost his coaching role in 2022, while the inquest into Matt Beard's death, who died a month after leaving Burnley Women, remains postponed. Both women shared their experiences with BBC business editor Simon Jack, whose own father died by suicide when he was 17.
