Germany's saviour? How Klopp is looking to turn fortunes around

Jurgen Klopp, hired as Germany's head coach in July on an annual salary of £6m, has drawn attention both for his outspoken public comments and his work rebuilding the national team. He recently called for "positive patriotism" and said he wants to "reclaim" the German flag, remarks made against the backdrop of far-right AfD election gains in Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, and cited recent successes of German athletes as evidence sport can foster community. Beyond his media appearances, Klopp has been touring league games and training grounds, drawing up an initial list of 57 potential players as he works to turn around the fortunes of a struggling national team.
