Engine cover design philosophy: Ferrari vs Mercedes

The 2023 Ferrari SF-23 and Mercedes W13's successor continue to diverge sharply in engine cover and airbox design, extending the contrasting philosophies seen in 2022. Ferrari uses a slim, triangular airbox tightly packaged around the exhaust with a low-slung, tightly wrapped rear bodywork, while Mercedes retains a larger air inlet and elaborate "shoulder" bulges with wedges directing airflow rearward. Mercedes' sidepods leave a large gap allowing airflow through the rear suspension onto the diffuser, whereas Ferrari appears to prioritize a lower centre of gravity with flow managed over the sidepods, a difference that may affect rear wing efficiency. Other visible distinctions include single versus double rear wing pylons and Ferrari's added winglets around the airbox.
