Xi-Modi meeting on Global South leadership

Chinese President Xi Jinping told Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in New Delhi that China and India, as the world's most populous nations and key members of the Global South, bear 'significant responsibilities' in an international landscape 'fraught with turbulence and change.' Xi said the two countries, despite differing national circumstances, have 'ample scope' to learn from each other's strengths and pursue shared development, and that the relationship has progressed over the past two years from a 'fresh start' to a 'new level of advancement,' with institutional exchanges resuming and bilateral trade hitting a new high. On the long-disputed border -- where the two sides have sparred repeatedly, including the 2020 Galwan Valley clash that killed at least 20 Indian and four Chinese soldiers, and where even the length of the border is disputed (India puts it at roughly 2,160 miles, China at less than half that) -- Xi called for both sides to maintain peace and tranquility and pursue 'parallel development' of relations and border issues together.
