House Democrats push for AI safeguards bill
A group of House Democrats -- Reps. Sam Liccardo, George Whitesides, Lori Trahan and Ted Lieu -- sent a letter to Speaker Mike Johnson urging him to cancel the chamber's planned recess and keep the House in session to pass AI safeguards legislation, warning of a 'catastrophic risk posed by advanced artificial intelligence.' Their letter cited threats including 'mass cybersecurity breaches and development of biological or chemical weapons' and pointed to a recent Anthropic report describing efforts it had disrupted involving its Claude models: an attempt to use Claude in ways that could support biological weapons development, a Chinese government-linked surveillance and recruitment operation targeting Uyghurs in Syria, and an Iran-linked effort to analyze public data to generate targeting recommendations against US naval forces in the region.
