France's permanent mission to the United Nations issued a public apology after a social-media post it had made criticizing the United States' voting record at the UN General Assembly drew a diplomatic backlash, with Washington having held up confirmation of France's incoming US ambassador over the dispute. In its statement, the French mission said the disagreement concerned 'one vote, and not the defence of human rights,' and stressed that such differences did not threaten the two countries' broader alliance or cooperation in multilateral forums. A US State Department official said Washington 'noted and appreciated' the French statement and looked forward to continued cooperation.
