Sydney Sweeney sports ad controversy
A wave of female athletes publicly condemned an advertising campaign for the sports-prediction platform Novig in which actress Sydney Sweeney appears nude or nearly nude, covering herself with footballs, a tennis racket, a baseball bat and other sports equipment; one Instagram clip for the campaign drew roughly 37 million views within four days. Four-time Olympic swimming gold medalist Ariarne Titmus called the ad infuriating, writing 'how do we live in a world where monetizing a woman's body and sexualizing women's sport is still a thing?' British sprinter Amy Hunt addressed Sweeney directly in a post-race BBC interview after placing fourth at the Ultimate Championship in Budapest -- 'this is what women in sport look like ... muscles, hard work, sweat, blood, tears' -- while former US gymnast Gracie Kramer, Australian swimmer Lani Pallister, boxer Skye Nicholson and surfer Felicity Palmateer all posted similar rebukes, several contrasting the ad with footage of their own training.
