The remarks accompany a string of structural changes Trump has pursued at the White House that have drawn criticism from preservationists and some legal challenges, including reinforcing the North Portico entrance, adding gold ornamentation to the Oval Office and Cabinet Room, paving over the Rose Garden, and demolishing the East Wing to make room for a planned 90,000-square-foot ballroom. His administration has also renovated the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, proposed repainting the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, and backed a planned 250-foot triumphal arch near Arlington National Cemetery.
