Congressional investigation into foreign influence networks
The House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on South and Central Asia held a hearing titled 'Trojan Horses: Covert Foreign Malign Influence Operations in America,' examining how activist groups, nonprofits and social-media influencers allegedly channel money and messaging from adversarial governments -- including China, Iran and Cuba -- into American political life. Witnesses centered much of their testimony on tech entrepreneur Neville Roy Singham, an American who lives in Shanghai and has publicly praised the Chinese Communist Party; researchers testified that between 2017 and 2025 roughly $278 million from Singham flowed into groups including CodePink, People's Forum and BreakThrough News, which in turn redistributed tens of millions more to dozens of other organizations, some of it aimed at opposing US data-center construction.
