Suspected sabotage cripples Dutch rail network
Rail travel across large parts of the Netherlands, including routes to Amsterdam, Schiphol Airport, Eindhoven and Utrecht, ground to a near-standstill on September 16 after metal pipes and cables were deliberately placed on tracks at roughly 30-35 locations nationwide, triggering automatic signal failures that stopped trains from passing. Rail infrastructure operator ProRail called it 'an intentional disruption... caused by human action,' and Dutch police opened a criminal investigation alongside the national prosecutor's office and intelligence agency AIVD; one train near Steenwijk struck an object on the tracks but no injuries were reported. Operator NS said the disruption was too extensive to run a bus replacement service, though service gradually resumed through the day.
