The Hashim Thaci war crimes trial
Kosovo's former president Hashim Thaci was sentenced to 25 years in prison on Wednesday after a Hague tribunal convicted him of war crimes committed during Kosovo's 1998-99 war of independence from Serbia, including murder, unlawful detention, torture and cruel treatment. The tribunal found him responsible for the murder of 96 political opponents and perceived collaborators by Kosovo Liberation Army forces; a number of other allegations against him were not proven. Three fellow former KLA commanders were tried alongside him, and prosecutors had sought 45-year sentences for all four.
