Kirk family security breach at UVU
Charlie Kirk's family filed a notice of claim - a legal precursor to a lawsuit - against Utah Valley University, the state of Utah and individual campus leaders, alleging that security failures led directly to the Turning Point USA founder's assassination on the school's campus on September 10, 2025. The filing, signed by attorneys Loren Washburn, Brett Parkinson and Clifford Parkinson, centers on a text exchange in which Turning Point organizers warned UVU police chief Jeffrey Long that students had flagged rooftop access near the Sorenson Center, close to where Kirk was to speak; Long allegedly replied 'I got you covered.' The Losee Center rooftop, from which the gunman fired, was never secured. The family says only six campus officers were assigned to an event that drew roughly 3,000 people, that Chief Long's request for more officers was denied by then-university president Astrid Tuminez, and that no written security plan or advance briefing took place.
