US tariffs on Indian Russian oil imports

The US House of Representatives has passed legislation, now headed to President Trump for signature, that would let him impose tariffs of up to 100% on countries that buy Russian oil and gas, along with broader sanctions powers against Russia. India and China are the two countries most exposed: China has taken roughly half of Russia's crude exports since late 2022 and India about 37%, according to the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air. Russian oil supplied over 30% of India's crude imports in the last fiscal year, worth about $40.8bn, more than the next six suppliers combined, and Indian officials say the cheap Russian supply has helped keep energy affordable for the country's 1.4 billion people.
