Death of Duncan Sheik
Singer-songwriter Duncan Sheik, whose 'Barely Breathing' spent 55 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 in the 1990s, has died at 56 of organ failure, his mother told the New York Times. Sheik later became a Tony- and Grammy-winning Broadway composer with 'Spring Awakening,' an envelope-pushing musical he wrote with playwright Steven Sater, adapting a 19th-century German play frank in its depictions of teenage sexuality, abortion and suicide. The show ran for over 860 performances starting in 2006 and won eight Tony Awards including best musical, plus the Grammy for best musical show album; Sheik also wrote musicals based on 'American Psycho' and 'Alice in Wonderland.' He is survived by his wife, Nora Ariffin, and their 7-year-old daughter, Ines.
