US military's faulty AI intelligence report
CNN reports that the US military nearly intercepted a Chinese ship in the Middle East this spring, during the Iran war, after an intelligence report generated with AI assistance wrongly identified it as carrying nuclear-weapons-program components. Armed US personnel were preparing to board the vessel and military planes were airborne before officials, digging into the report just before the operation, discovered a special-operations analyst had used a chatbot to draft it and that the chatbot had misidentified the cargo - CNN could not learn what it actually was. One source called the report 'entirely false' and said it 'almost started a war,' since any US action against a Chinese vessel risked escalating into direct conflict between the two countries. The analyst had queried the chatbot about ship-manifest intelligence from US Special Operations Command Pacific, which fused open-source and classified signals intelligence to reach its conclusion, then used AI again to write up the findings as a standard, trusted intelligence report; Special Operations Command Pacific and the Pentagon did not respond to requests for comment. The episode comes as the military and intelligence community push to expand AI use across intelligence analysis and target selection, following Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's January 'Artificial Intelligence Acceleration Strategy.'
