The Kennedy Center name dispute

A months-long legal fight over Trump's effort to put his name on the Kennedy Center culminated in mid-September when the Trump-aligned board voted to close most of the historic Washington performing arts venue, hours after US District Judge Christopher Cooper for a second time blocked the board from adding Trump's name to the building without congressional approval. Cooper had first ordered Trump's name removed in May, ruling the board lacked authority to rename the center; the board then voted in August to add the inscription 'Restored and Renovated by President Donald J. Trump,' which Cooper struck down again in September, writing 'defendants cannot install memorials for President Trump or anyone or anything else at the Kennedy Center without Congress's blessing.' The Justice Department appealed. Trump said on social media the closure was for safety reasons, tied to a partial ceiling collapse earlier in the month, but that Congress's $257m in allocated repair funding would only be used if the board could add his name to the building.

The board, chaired by Trump and composed largely of his cabinet members and allies, said the venue faced a 'precarious fiscal position' and could not meet payroll or maintenance obligations within weeks; the closure decision followed testy exchanges between Trump and Democratic board member Rep. Joyce Beatty, who called the renaming push 'a transparent effort to circumvent the Court's ruling' and said Trump had caused 'extreme harm,' while Trump called her 'incompetent' and accused her of 'holding up the whole country.' The venue's fate remained in limbo as of mid-September, with the board's earlier plan for a full two-year renovation closure -- previously blocked by Cooper in May as 'ill-informed and seemingly preordained' -- now proceeding regardless, and a separate ruling already having awarded jazz musician Chuck Redd over $250,000 after the center sued him for cancelling a show over the Trump rebranding.
