Israeli settler violence against Palestinians
Israeli settler violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank escalated sharply through August 2026. In the village of Qusra near Nablus, settlers besieged three Palestinian households (the Abu Ridi and Hassan families) starting August 10, cutting their water and power for days; when Israeli forces moved to disperse the settlers on August 13-14, they instead declared the village a closed military zone, ordered roughly a dozen additional Palestinian households to vacate their homes, and used some vacated houses as barracks, drawing an admission from an Israeli government spokesperson that the settlers' actions were 'deplorable' and would be investigated. Residents reported soldiers ransacking homes and stealing cash during the operation; even US Ambassador Mike Huckabee, a longtime settlement supporter, condemned the siege as 'a horrific act of terror.' Rights groups documented a broader pattern of settlers targeting Palestinian industry and farmland to force residents off land, including a fire that destroyed 12 acres of olive trees and damaged an aluminum factory in Ein Siniya, an attack that ruined equipment at a facility in as-Samu costing an estimated $700,000, and 798 documented settler attacks in July alone, per the Colonization and Wall Resistance Commission.
The violence increasingly targeted children: in the village of al-Mughayyir, six residents including three schoolboys were killed by settlers or soldiers in 2026, including 14-year-old Aws al-Naasan, shot dead outside his school in April, and 9-year-old Salim Abu Rahma, shot and wounded on his family's sheep farm in late July by a settler who had reportedly told the family to leave their land; a June UN Commission of Inquiry found settlers had 'instrumentalized children as part of a broader coercive strategy to drive Palestinians off their land,' a finding Israel dismissed as a 'libellous sham.' UN figures recorded 316 Palestinians killed and over 5,600 injured by Israeli forces or settlers since the start of 2025 through July 2026, versus 20 Israelis killed and 123 injured over the same period; a Yesh Din study found only about 3% of investigated Israeli settlers were ever convicted for crimes against Palestinians between 2005 and 2024. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attributed the violence to a small group of '150 juvenile delinquents,' even as Israel's Finance Ministry advanced plans, described by settlement monitor Peace Now as 'a clear step towards annexation,' to take over West Bank land registration, and the UK prepared new sanctions in response to settlement expansion.
