Tiger Woods pleads no contest to reckless driving charge over rollover crash in Florida
Golfer Tiger Woods, 50, pleaded no contest to a reduced reckless-driving charge in Martin County, Florida court on September 2, as part of a plea deal that dropped the original DUI and refusal-to-test misdemeanor charges stemming from a March rollover crash. He accepted a five-year suspension of his driver's license and a $1,000 fine; Florida State Attorney Thomas Bakkedahl said he treated the case like any other, remarking, 'Today I resolved a case involving a man who drives a golf ball for a living. Tomorrow, I'll resolve a case in the same matter for a man who drives a nail for a living.' No one was injured in the crash, though Woods had to crawl out through the passenger door after his vehicle clipped a truck and rolled over; body camera footage released in April showed him calmly telling officers, 'I looked down at my phone, and all of a sudden, boom.'
Woods passed a breathalyzer test at the scene but declined a urinalysis screening for other substances; officers said they suspected his 'normal faculties' were impaired by an unknown substance, and authorities later found two hydrocodone pills, an opioid, in his pocket. Woods told officers he had taken prescription medication that morning but had not consumed alcohol. Following the arrest -- his second on suspicion of DUI -- Woods said on social media he was 'stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health' in order to prioritize his wellbeing and 'lasting recovery.'
