Celine Dion's Paris comeback
Celine Dion, 58, returned to the stage on September 12 for her first full concert in six years, opening a sold-out 26-show residency at the Plenitude Arena (also called Paris La Defense Arena) in Nanterre, near Paris, four years after being diagnosed with stiff person syndrome, an incurable autoimmune neurological disorder that had forced her to cancel tours and left her unable to sing the way she used to. Opening with the French-language song 'On ne change pas,' Dion wept within minutes, telling the crowd of roughly 30,000, 'I made a promise to come back, to be back on stage. And here I am. Singing for you, and singing for me... I am everything I am because you loved me.' Critics from The Telegraph, The Times of London, Variety and CBC described the show as raw, emotional and 'high-stakes,' noting her voice sounded fragile and wobbling at first before gaining confidence, with reviewers saying they preferred this 'less superhuman' version of the singer. Ahead of the show, Dion greeted fans -- including a young man she spontaneously duetted with -- outside her Paris hotel, and Paris hosted citywide tribute events including karaoke nights and Seine river cruises for fans who couldn't get tickets to the sold-out shows, which sold so fast an additional 10 dates were added for May 2027.
