Russian strike on train carrying Western officials

A Russian drone struck a train's engine at Yahodyn station near the Ukraine-Poland border on September 13, 2026, minutes after a diplomatic train carrying former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, UK national security adviser Jonathan Powell and other senior European officials had departed the same station early -- reportedly due to standing fears of Russian strikes -- and crossed safely into Poland. No casualties were reported; all passengers on the struck train had been evacuated after a 15-minute warning. Former CIA director David Petraeus was on a separate train still at the station when the strike happened, and former Swedish PM Carl Bildt, on another train just behind Johnson's, posted video appearing to show the drone hitting the nearby train as passengers fled. Ukraine's rail operator, Ukrzaliznytsia, said it was "quite likely" the diplomats' train had been the intended target; Russia's defense ministry said it had struck "railway infrastructure... used to transport military cargoes from European countries." All the officials had been attending the Yalta European Strategy security conference in Kyiv.
