Singapore luxury goods auction after money laundering bust
Singapore is auctioning off hundreds of luxury items seized in one of the largest money-laundering busts in history, a 2023 operation involving assets worth roughly S$3 billion (about $2.4 billion). Ten Chinese nationals were convicted of laundering proceeds from overseas scams and illegal gambling through Singaporean businesses and properties, drawing prison terms of 13 to 17 months before being released and deported; 15 additional fugitives surrendered assets in exchange for having Interpol notices against them dropped. The forfeited haul - Cartier, Bulgari and Hermès jewelry, designer handbags, cars, wine, gold bars and even collectible Bearbrick toys - is so large that auction house Hotlotz is spreading sales across 15 rounds running into next May to avoid saturating the market, with the first two online sales expected to raise up to S$3.9 million ($3.1 million) for the Singapore treasury.
