The Philippines ferry fire
A fire broke out aboard the passenger ferry MV June Aster on the evening of September 9, 2026, as it neared the end of a more-than-20-hour voyage from Manila to the tourist destination of Coron in Palawan province, ultimately killing 76 of the 132 people aboard in the deadliest Philippine maritime disaster in years. Survivors described hearing one or two loud explosions -- the coast guard said the blaze began in the cargo hold before spreading rapidly, fanned by wind -- followed by smoke and fire that swept through the vessel so fast that many passengers had no time to don life jackets; one survivor told the BBC he was trampled by panicked passengers before jumping into the sea and being rescued hours later. Only 43 people survived, and toxic fumes and lingering heat kept rescuers from boarding the wreck for more than 40 hours; when firefighters finally entered on September 11, they found burned remains clustered in the ferry's economy-class section, and the coast guard recovered a total of 76 bodies by September 13, with 13 people still unaccounted for. The ferry, built in 2002 and operated by Atienza Interisland Ferries, held valid safety certificates and had passed an inspection in March, but investigators were examining potential manifest discrepancies, cargo-loading practices and crew emergency-response protocols; the fate of the ship's captain remained unclear, with coast guard officials saying they believed he survived despite his name being absent from the official list of survivors.
