Tennessee's first female execution in two centuries
Tennessee's governor declined to halt the execution of Christa Pike, the state's lone woman on death row, who would have been the first woman executed there in more than 200 years. An appeals court ordered a short stay less than two hours before the scheduled lethal injection to consider her claims of childhood sexual abuse. Her lawyers then said she was still alive after being given two lethal injections of pentobarbital, and the governor has halted future executions.
