France bans stun grenades in student protests
French police have suspended the use of GLI-F4 stun grenades against student protesters after a teenage boy's hand was blown off when one detonated during a demonstration. The devices combine a blast effect with a small TNT charge and have previously caused serious injuries at other protests, fuelling public and political pressure for their withdrawal. It is not yet clear whether the suspension will be permanent or what alternative crowd-control measures police will use.
